In star-studded Colorado, astronomical gems abound in the state’s dark skies.

Last summer I went camping with friends and family in Colorado’s Arkansas River Valley near Buena Vista. As I sat around the campfire I looked up at the sky, stunned by the multitude of stars. I verbally lamented my lack of star knowledge and, no surprise, one friend started naming constellations. She pointed out the Summer Triangle, which was visible on the eastern horizon with Vega at its pinnacle. From Vega she guided me to the parallelogram constellation, Lyra.
