Camping

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) manages a campground at Hecla Junction as part of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA). Camping in AHRA campsites requires a reservation through the CPW website.

Boating

Hecla Junction features an AHRA boat launch/takeout popular with whitewater enthusiasts and anglers. Both whitewater boating and fishing in Browns Canyon are managed by CPW.

Hiking

The trailhead for the Arkansas River Trail is located south of the boat ramp at Hecla Junction. The 1-mile trail follows the west bank of the river to the south for a relaxing and easy walk. It offers a quiet view of the river and the pinon-juniper forest as well as access for fishing.

Leave No Trace

Please follow the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace outdoor recreation.

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare.
  2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces.
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly.
  4. Leave What You Find.
  5. Minimize Campfire Impacts.
  6. Respect Wildlife.
  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors.

Critical Habitat

The Hecla Junction area is critical habitat for bighorn sheep, elk and mule deer. Please respect wildlife according to the Sixth Principle of Leave No Trace:

  • Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.
  • Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors and exposes them to predators and other dangers.
  • Control pets at all times, or leave them at home.
  • Avoid wildlife during sensitive times: mating, nesting, raising young, and winter.
