Railroad Gulch

Seasonal Closure

At the southern boundary of Browns Canyon National Monument, Railroad Gulch is subject to a seasonal closure from March 15 to July 31 to prevent disturbance of raptor nesting areas during nesting season.

Access

Since there are no designated trails in the Railroad Gulch area, access is challenging. DO NOT park anywhere in Turret to hike to Railroad Gulch as all property and roads in Turret are private property. Driving beyond Turret on County Road 184 (Turret Road) and parking alongside the road is recommended.

Hiking

Hiking is the primary means of accessing Railroad Gulch, but since there are no designated trails that provide access, wayfinding/orienteering skills are needed to visit this iconic geologic feature.

Critical Habitat

The Railroad Gulch area provides critical habitat for raptors, bighorn sheep, and Mexican spotted owl.
